Initialement ce patron est un patron comme les autres avec des découpes et un métrage en tissu comme les autres. 2 1/4 yards (2.1m) pour la Taille 2. Sauf que voilà, je n’avais qu’un mètre du tissu que je voulais absolument utiliser (en laize 125cm), et le tissu il n’était pas négociable.

Initially this pattern was just a regular pattern like any other ones, with some standards fabric requirements. 2 1/4 yards for Size 2. The only problem was that I only had 1m of the 25in wide fabric that I absolutely wanted to use. And the fabric choice was not negociable.

Ce tissu je l’ai trouvé chez l’Oiseau Fabrics et il est composé de chanvre bio et polyester recyclé, une sorte de chambray/denim. Je l’avais commandé surtout par curiosité, pensant me faire une jupe avec, mais c’était avant que Colette Patterns / Seamwork Mag sorte les Moji Pants… Un pantalon qu’ils présentent comme « cousable » dans n’importe quel tissu et adaptable pour n’importe quelle occasion. Il se trouve que le tissu me donnait la même impression, ressemblant presque à du jeans mais plus fin, brillant à cause du polyester et avec des petites « imperfections » super jolies venant du chanvre, lui donnant un côté plus nature.

This fabric is from L’Oiseau Fabric, and made from a blend of organic hemp and recycled polyester, in a type of chambray/denim. I ordered it mostly out of curiosity, thinking I ll make a short skirt or a pair of shorts out of it, but it was before Colette / Seamwork Mag released the Moji pants… A pair of pants that they introduce as very versatile, and sewable in anystyle and type of fabric. The fabric I had gave me the same feeling, looking almost like jeans, but thinner, a bit shinny sleek because of the polyester, and with small cute imperfections due to the hemp, giving it a rougher look.  

Le temps estimé pour faire le pantalon est 3h. Je ne comprendrai jamais les temps chez Colette Pattern. 3h c’est le temps que je mets ne serait-ce que pour découper le tissu… Et là, comme évidemment ça ne rentrait pas (oui je peux être très persévérante et j’adore optimiser mes coupons du tissu), on parle plutôt de 3j de découpe… Le bon point c’est que le tissu n’était pas imprimé et il n’y avait donc pas de sens. Mais passer de 2.1m à 1m, c’est quand même costaud… Mais à force de bricoler et gratter partout où je pouvais j’ai réussi à presque tout faire rentrer en faisant les modifs/les compromis suivant:

• les marges de 5/8in sont passées à 3/8in;
• la doublure des poches a été découpée dans un autre tissu assez similaire;
• les poches ont été découpées dans l’autre sens;
• la hauteur de la bande de la taille a été un chouilla réduite;
• la longueur de la ceinture a été réduite (j’ai pu le faire grâce à mes modifs du patron dos, voir plus loin);
• le cordon que je voulais faire à partir du même tissu a été fait avec plein de chutes cousues bout à bout;

The estimated time to sew these pants was 3h. I will never understand the estimated sewing time they give… 3h is the time I usually take to cut the fabric… And this time, because of course the pattern pieces were not fitting (yes I can be really stubborn when I have an idea in mind, and I love to optimize my fabric), we are talking more about 3 days… The good thing already was that the fabric was not printed so I could cut each pattern piece both ways. But to reduce the requirements from 2.1m down to 1m… After multiple attempts failed attempts and tweeks to the pattern pieces I almost succeeded to fit everything in 1m, doing the following compromises/modifications:

• the seam allowances have been reduced from 5/8in down to 3/8in;
• The Pocket lining was cut in another similar fabric;
• pockets were cut perpendicular to the grain direction;
• the waist height was reduced a tiny bit;
• the length of the waist band was also reduced a bit (because of the darts see below);
• the link to tie up the pants was made from small scraps of fabrics sewn together;

En faisant toutes ces modifications, la taille 2 rentre dans 1m de tissu uni. Et j’ai réussi à quand même caser les revers!! Ça aussi, ça fait tout le charme du pantalon et c’était pas négociable. Au final voici ce qu’il m’est resté du tissu…

With these modifications, size 2 fits in 1m of plain fabric. And I even managed to squeeze the cuffs in! These ones were also not negociable. At the end, this is what was left of the fabric:

J’ai aussi utilisé 2 petits rectangles de 5cm par 7cm découpés dans les chutes pour faire les passepoils passants de la taille car impossible de mettre les œillets proprement avec l’outil que j’avais. Il me massacrait le tissu à chaque fois. Même mon mari, plutôt familier avec ce genre d’outil m’a dit de laisser tomber. La fonction boutonnière de ma machine étant cassée, j’ai opté pour la solution passepoil, ça rend nickel.

I also used 2 small 5cm by 7cm rectangles cut in the scraps to make pipings on the waist because it was impossible to put eyelets without damaging the fabric with the tool I had. Even my husband, usually quite good with this sort of tooling told me to give up. Plus, my sewing machine buttonhole function was not working anylonger, so I chose the piping option, and it works great.

La dernière modification que j’ai faite, c’est le dos. Je n’aimais pas l’idée d’avoir des fronces un peu sac à patate sur les fesses, du coup j’ai rajouté 2 pinces longues de 10cm et larges de 2cm au milieu des pièces dos, et j’ai grignoté 2cm sur chaque pièce le long de la ligne milieu, soit 8cm en moins au niveau de la taille.

The last modification I made was the back. I didn’t like the gather at the back, potentially potatoe style, so I added 2 darts, 10cm long and 2cm wide. I also reduced of 2cm each pattern piece along the centerline. Therefore a total of 8cm less around the waist.

Au final je suis archi fan de ce pantalon Moji!! Et c’est vrai il s’adapte à toutes les circonstances! Avec des talons il devient chic, avec des oxfords il devient boyish, et avec des tongs ou des ballerines, il devient décontracté! Je vous montrerai tout ça sur Instagram 😉 Très beau week-end à vous!!
