Le sweat en mérinos MakeMyPattern

Steve porte son sweat à capuche Make My Pattern en mérinos (pour sweatshirt) de chez New Zealand Merino And Fabrics. Oui on est en vacances dans le Jura à la campagne, donc c’est relax sur le rasage 😉

Make My Pattern, je l’ai découvert sur Instagram. Il n’y a pas à dire, Instagram c’est formidable pour le Do It Yourself. Joost De Cock, le créateur du site, y parlait de courbes de Bézier, donc forcément, ça m’a interpellée.

I discovered Make My Pattern through Instagram. Instagram is really fab for Do It Yourself… Joost De Cock, the creator of the website was talking about Bezier curves, so of course, it intrigued me.

Donc j’ai continué mon exploration et découvert un mec incroyable, un soupçon déjanté, un peu geek (-> les courbes de Bézier), super talentueux, extrêmement drôle et surtout, d’une générosité sans équivalent! En effet, Joost, dans son temps libre (oui car Joost travaille dans la com au parlement européen… rien à voir…) développe et propose ensuite gratuitement des patrons pour homme sur son site super bien fait. Et puis il ne fait pas que tracer 2 ou 3 patrons et les scanner, non il les paramètre… Je vous ai dit que le mec était un peu geek 😉

I therefore kept on exploring a bit, and discovered an incredible guy, a bit crazy, a bit geek (-> the Bezier curves), extremely talented, very funny, and incredibly generous! Indeed, Joost, in his free time (yes, Joost works at the European parliament, nothing to do with sewing!), develops and offers for free men patterns through his very well designed website. And he does not just draw a couple of patterns, he actually sets parameters for the patterns… When I told you he was a bit of a geek 😉

Euh ça veut dire quoi qu’il les paramètre…? En gros le mec il trouve les équations qui vont bien pour tracer les courbes du patron (équations qui dépendent des dimensions du modèle), puis il écrit son code, et le patron se fait « tout seul » exactement à vos mesures! Une aubaine pour ceux qui sont un peu en dehors des standards, comme mon mari, plutôt plus grand que la moyenne et fin.

Hum, what do you mean by parameters…? Basically, the guy finds the equations of the pattern curves (equations which depends on the model dimensions), he then types his code, and the pattern automatically prints itself on pdf, completely at your measurements! Fantastic for men that are a bit outside of the standards, like my husband, quite tall and slim.

Par contre je vous recommande de très bien suivre ses explications pour prendre les mesures, car au contraire des patrons déjà tout faits du commerce, dont on est sûrs qu’ils respectent les proportions standards, on peut se retrouver avec les patrons paramétrés avec des pièces complètement déformées. Genre vous oubliez un zéro sur la longueur de manche, votre sweat manche longue devient un marcel… Ça m’est arrivé avec le sweat de Steve, j’avais mal mesuré sa hauteur de capuche et on s’est retrouvé avec une capuche en taille 3-6mois…

However, I really recommend you follow very well the instructions and explanations for the measurements. Because unlike ready-to-wear patterns from the shop, that are always respecting quite standard proportions, you can end up with a pattern completely out-of-shape or deformed. For example, you forget a zero on the arm length and you end up with a singlet instead of a long sleeves tshirt… It happened with Steve’s sweatshirt, I didn’t measure his head height correctly and we ended up with a baby hood…

(La capuche est doublée car sinon « ça fait cheap ». The hood has a liner, otherwise, « it looks cheap »)

Heureusement Joost a tout de suite vu le problème, et a répondu en quelques heures. Impressionnant le support technique 😉 Je me demande quand même encore si j’ai bien tout mesuré, car sa capuche est très haute. Steve me dit que c’est pas grave, car de toutes façons, personne ne met jamais sa capuche et que c’est chouette car en avion son sweat lui servira aussi de masque de sommeil 🙂

Thankfully, Joost immediately saw the issue and answered within a few hours. Impressive the technical support 😉 But I still wonder if I took the correct measurements as the hoodie is still quite high. Steve told me it is no big deal anyway, as nobody ever wears the hood anyway, and that it will be pretty cool to help him sleep in an aircraft 🙂

Pour ce qui est des instructions, elles n’existaient pas encore donc j’y suis un peu allée au feeling… Ma machine a même réussi à coudre toutes les épaisseurs de la capuche!

The instructions didn’t exist yet, so I kind of improvised and it went ok… My sewing machine even managed to sew all the hood layers!

Le tissu, vous l’aurez reconnu il s’agit du molleton de mérinos vert canard (enfin plutôt sapin) de la petite robe sweat de Vivi! Tout doux et tout chaud ^^ J’ai remarqué après coup que c’était la même couleur que celle que Joost avait choisi pour son sweat Alpha. Alors il ne s’agit pas d’un manque de personnalité, c’est juste que sur le site, le tissu paraissait plutôt bleu canard. Pas toujours facile de commander ses tissus par internet 😦

You would have recognized the fabrics, it is the merino mallard green sweatshirting of Vivi’s little sweatshirt dress! Very soft and toasty warm ^^ I noticed afterwards that it was the same color Joost chose for his Alpha homeboy hoodie. So it is not a lack of personnality, it is just that on the website, it actually looked blue. Not always easy to order fabrics through the internet 😦

En tous cas, les 2 ils me font envie avec leurs sweats tout chaud, tout confort! Il me reste encore un petit peu de tissu, alors je vais étudier si je n’arriverais pas à caser un petit sweat pour moi aussi en suivant ces conseils 😉

In all cases, now I am envying both of them with their toasty warm sweatshirts! I still have some fabrics left, so I will study whether I could fit a little sweatshirt for me too or not 😉

En attendant je vous encourage vraiment à aller faire un petit tour sur le site de Make My Pattern, un petit peu tard pour le cadeau de Noël pour votre moitié, mais il y a d’autres occasions 🙂 Et puis je crois que l’une des motivations de Joost c’est de démocratiser la couture auprès de la gente masculine, encore peu représentée. Le site et le personnage sont tellement cools que ça ne m’étonnerait pas qu’il réussisse son pari 🙂

In the meantime I really encourage you to go and have a look at Make My Pattern website. It might be a bit late for a Christmas present for your beloved half but there will be some other opportunities 🙂 And I think one of Joost’s motivations is to make sewing popular amongst men too. And honestly, the website and the guy are so cool that I am pretty sure he will succeed 🙂
